The Top 5 Picks on Buying a Hunting/Survival Knife?

Are you looking to buy a hunting or survival knife? You are probably wondering what features I should look for in a survival knife? Survival knives come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. There are knives with bottle openers, saw blades, infra-red resistance, and many other features. Do you need all these features? Most certainly, no. Well, this article gives you an insight into what features you can consider when choosing a hunting and survival knife.

    Type of Blade

When it comes to hunting and survival knives, fixed blades are preferred to folding knives. This is due to the fact any moving joints scream weakness. The moving parts mean that knife can fail you when you most need it. For example, due to mud, blood, or other substances stuck in the joint, unfolding it might be challenging. Foldable knives also require extra maintenance. A fixed blade can save you all these troubles.

    Size

Size is also a factor to consider when buying a survival/hunting knife. However, when it comes to hunting knives, the biggest is not always the best.  If the blade size is too big, you can compromise its use for detailed tasks such as carving. On the other hand, a small blade is not fit for carrying out rugged tasks such as chopping. The ideal size for a survival knife is 9-11 inches.

    Tang

The Tang of a knife is the portion that extends into the handle. Hunting knives come in full tangs and partial tangs. A full tang knife is preferred because it is much stronger than the other types. A partial tang loosens over time, develops “play,” and it becomes difficult to handle. Handling a partial tang after it comes loose from the handle is very dangerous. It is easier to modify a full tang even if it loosens from the handle.

    Sharp Pointed Tip

This may sound obvious, but survival knives have angular, rounded, or hooked tips. A sharp-pointed tip is considered more specifically for self-defense. Anything that is not sharp-pointed compromises your capacity to effectively stab your knife as a weapon. A sharp-pointed tip can also be good for hunting.- either by being lashed to a pole to create a long reach spear or by itself.

    Pommel

The bottom of a knife’s handle is known as the pommel. A pommel can be used for hammering and light-duty pounding. It is also great for driving housing dangers. Knives with rounded or hooked pommels are not perfect for hammering. I believe you want to get the best of your knife. A well-made and large pommel increases your capabilities.

Using the above criterion, you can choose your ideal survival or hunting knife. The choice will depend on what you want the survival and hunting knife to do for you. Additionally, it’s a great option to buy your hunting/survival knife from a customized seller. They design a knife that best suits your needs. A great company that deals with custom hand-made and survival knives is B Merry Studio.
