Thousands of women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and early detection is the best way to fight the condition. That’s where breast screening comes in.

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue start to grow abnormally with the potential to spread outside the breast into other areas of the body. While more common among women, men can also develop the cancer as they have breast tissue too.

    What is a breast screen?

A breast screen can detect cancerous cells before a lump or any other difference might be detected. A breast screen is also known as a mammogram and it takes four images of the breasts to make sure all areas of the tissue are examined. Through these images, doctors can detect early stage cancer smaller than a grain of rice.

Why should you have a breast screen?

Early detection can mean the difference between life and death in some cases. According to the home doctor experts at House Call Doctor, women should start attending breast screen check-ups from the age of 40 onwards to maintain their health. However, if you are concerned about your breast health, you should ask your doctor about getting a screen before you turn 40.  Unlike some cancers, there is a good chance of recovery if breast cancer is detected early.

    Symptoms of breast cancer

    • Breast lump or thick tissue that feels different to surrounding tissue
    • Breast pain
    • Nipple discharge (not breast milk)
    • Swelling in part of or all of breast
    • Peeling or flaking of the skin on your nipple or breast
    • Change in appearance of the skin on your breast
    • Lump or swelling in armpit area.

If you are experiencing the symptoms above, contact your trusted healthcare professional and discuss the option of a breast screen.
