Singapore is a multi-racial and multi-religious society that is generally welcoming to people of all ethnics. Coupled with the widespread use of English and a highly safe environment, the country is a prime location for expats. Yet, there are many benefits that locals enjoy over their foreigner counterparts. As such, a large number of permeant resident applications are received by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) each year.

In the past, most applications were accepted so long as the applicant came from a reputable educational institute. However, due to societal pressure, the government has tightened the requirements of PR applications. This has lengthened the typical period needed for PR application. There is no precise deadline for PR applications in Singapore, instead each application commonly takes between four to six months. However, to be successful in your application, it is strongly advised that you begin strategizing for at least a year before.

Firstly, you must eligible to apply for PR application. The following are the listed criteria by ICA:

    • Spouse of a Singapore citizen or a Singapore permanent resident
    • Holder of an Employment Pass or S Pass
    • Aged parent of a Singapore citizen
    • Student studying in Singapore
    • Foreigner investor in Singapore

Secondly, ICA examines your family ties to Singaporeans, your current or potential economic contributions, education, age, family profile. Therefore, even before the application, you will need to find ways to satisfy these criteria. For example, the individual should look for volunteer opportunities and mix around locals in order to demonstrate a willingness to contribute to the society. As such, we strongly advise that you integrate into Singapore’s society at least a year in advance before applying for permeant resident status.

Thirdly, you will need to do up the required documentation and sign the application forms. It is important to note here that all documents should be error free. Where documentation is incorrectly submitted, the timeline will be delayed. Once the application is completed, all that is left is to wait for the result of the application.

In the event that you receive a rejection on your first attempt, do not be too disheartened. Most PRs do not attain a pass on their first attempt; instead you may need to strengthen your case. For example, taking a bigger role in your company and actively volunteering in Singapore for a longer duration.

Additionally, you can engage a professional PR application agency to improve your chances of succeeding on the second round. Their experience in Apply PR Singapore applications will allow them to give you advice on how to improve various aspects of both documentation and your case. Typically, these agencies have a high track record of success, which makes up for the extra costs incurred in engaging them.
