Chartering vs Buying a Boat: What You Should Know

It happens to people all the time: They go on a harbor cruise, a whale watching tour , or a romantic sailing getaway, and they hear the call of the sea. They just can’t shake it. Something inside them just clicks, and all they can think about is getting back on the water. If this has been your experience, you’re probably looking at boat ads now, dreaming about what it would be like to own your own vessel. Before you dive right into the world of boat ownership, though, think about what it really involves. Don’t forget that you have options, including chartering a boat instead of buying one.

    Expense

You already know about the upfront expense of buying a boat: the purchase price. If you need a loan to make the purchase, you’ll also have interest to pay. Maybe you’ve got that all under control. However, what most people don’t consider is the operational expense of owning their own boat. For example, you’ll have insurance, mooring fees, fuel costs, ongoing maintenance, and repairs to pay for. Even if you plan to do most of the work yourself, you’ll still have to pay for materials and for the time you spend hauled out at the yard. On the other hand, when you choose San Diego boat charters instead, all of those year-round details are covered for you, and all you have to pay for are the times you are actually out on the water.

    Commitment

Owning a boat is a huge commitment. In addition to the significant initial investment and ongoing maintenance mentioned above, you’ll want to be sure to take the vessel out regularly so it doesn’t just sit for most of the year. You’ll also be responsible for winterizing it and for keeping the mooring lines and fenders in good shape. If you want to take other people out to sea with you, for example, hosting a boat wedding San Diego, you’ll be responsible for their safety and wellbeing.

    Crewing and Provisioning

You may think that it would be really fun to offer your friends boat tours San Diego, but it’s not as simple as getting a few people together and heading out. Depending on the type of vessel you have and how you arrange your outings, you may need Coast Guard approval, as well as local permits and licenses. When you’re the owner of the boat, you also need to hire a crew. Advertising, interviewing, vetting, and training takes a lot of time, energy, and expense. However, when you charter a boat, you can have that vessel’s crew available to do all the hard work! Provisioning, which you can think of as grocery shopping on steroids, is another monumental task that you don’t have to think about when you charter a boat. Although you may want to bring along a few favorite foods or toiletries, when you’re chartering, you don’t have to be in charge of all the details, such as salt, pepper, drinking water, and dish soap. What are you waiting for? It’s time to charter a boat, let the professionals handle the particulars, sit back, and enjoy the trip!
